The pipes underneath our kitchen sinks shouldn’t be expected to run like well-oiled machines. In fact, as we pointed out in a recent blog, kitchen sink drains shouldn’t be oiled at all! Naturally, a lot more than just water goes down those drains. In addition to getting clogged from time to time, kitchen sink pipes are susceptible to corrosion, rusting and deterioration. This can lead to leaks, water damage and costly repairs.
What are the signs that it’s time to replace the pipes under your kitchen sink? Here are three:
1. Visible corrosion or rust.
Corroded or rusty pipes are clear indications that they are reaching the ends of their lives. Do you notice any rust patches or flaking metal? Are there greenish-blue stains on your copper pipes? These are signs of deterioration that can lead to recurring leaks. As well, it’s important to know that rust can contaminate your water. Do you see any discolouration in the water coming from your pipes? A slight brownish or reddish colour is evidence of an issue.
Is there an unpleasant taste to your water? Rust can create a distasteful metallic flavouring. In addition, weird-smelling water can indicate the pipes under your kitchen sink are harbouring mould, mildew or rot. Of course, this can be hazardous to your health. Mould is a well known culprit for respiratory issues and allergic reactions. Foul tastes and smells emanating from rusty pipes must be addressed immediately.
2. Strange noises during water flow.
Do you hear any banging, clanking, squeaking, squealing or gurgling when you turn on the faucet? What may sound like awesome sound effects from a horror movie are actually clear indications you have a pipe problem! In many cases, such sounds are signs that the pipes under the kitchen sink are loose, clogged or may even have air trapped inside of them. Such circumstances are generally due to corrosion or structural damage.
Bathroom products manufacturer, Rbrohant describes the most common causes of faucet noise as a phenomenon known as “water hammer”. “Water hammer occurs when water traveling through the pipes suddenly comes to a halt or changes direction rapidly, creating a shockwave,” explains their website, “This shockwave causes the pipes to vibrate and produce a loud banging or thudding noise. Water hammer is often more noticeable in older plumbing systems, but it can happen in newer homes as well.”
3. They’re getting up there in age.
As with everything else, old age takes its toll. Are the pipes under your kitchen sink older than 20 years? If so, a replacement is likely in order. Keep in mind that the materials used to manufacture pipes are often galvanized steel and cast iron. They are made to last between 20 and (if you’re lucky) 50 years before they need to be replaced. Sensibly, you should lean towards getting a replacement after the two decade mark.
Remember that old pipes are more susceptible to leaks, corrosion and bursts. This is true even if you don’t happen to see any of the abovementioned signs of deterioration. By replacing your old pipes, you can prevent future problems. The peace of mind in knowing you’re avoiding the potential for major water damage should make it all worthwhile.
