Back in June, when we started up the 2 Bro’s Plumbing Blog, we set out to answer many of your most common plumbing questions. In one of our earliest blogs, we filled you in on what to do if you have dripping faucets, low water pressure and clogged drains. Since then, we’ve been building our blog section to become a wealth of information about any and all of your household plumbing issues. Allow us to answer some more of your most common plumbing questions!
Why does my toilet keep running?
Although we have dedicated a few blog posts to toilet-related issues, we thought we’d tackle this question first. It is a very common one. That running toilet of yours is more than just an irritation. It’s a water-wasting money-drainer! Chances are that a faulty flapper is the culprit. When it doesn’t close properly after flushing, it allows water to continuously flow into the bowl. Even if the leaking happens periodically, it can still present a problem on your water bill.
Check to see if the chain connecting the flapper to the flushing lever is either too long or too short. It may be preventing the valve from sealing. In the event you need a new flapper, simply pick one up from a local Home Depot or Rona. Flappers are easy to replace. Give this blog a read for detailed instructions on how to replace your toilet flapper.
Why is my water bill so high?
As we just noted, a running toilet can create unnecessary water loss that leads to higher water bills. Of course, there are many other leaks that could be presenting you with greater expenses. It’s important to locate any hidden plumbing issues throughout your household. Are there any broken or leaky pipes in the bathrooms or the kitchen? Check under your sinks and around your toilets for visible leaks.
It’s also a good idea to run some tests around the home. Turn off all the water fixtures and check your water meter. Is it still moving? If so, it’s a sign there’s likely a leak somewhere in the house. In Durham Region, consumption is measured by the water meter. “Is your bill higher than usual?” asks their website, “Reading the meter regularly can help you find leaks, which can result in high bills. A leaky flapper valve in the toilet is a common problem.”
How do I prevent frozen pipes in the winter?
Although the summer season hasn’t come to a close just yet, it’s wise to prepare your home for the forthcoming colder months. Frozen pipes can be a major concern in Canada. In order to prevent pipes from freezing, they should be insulated. This is especially important in unheated areas such as the basement, the attic and crawl spaces.
During the extremely cold days of winter, it’s actually a good idea to allow your faucets to drip just a little bit. That way, you can ensure that water remains moving through the pipes. As well, keep the cabinet doors under your sinks open. This will allow warm air to circulate around your plumbing. If you happen to find a frozen pipe, pull out the hair dryer! The blowing of warm air will work to gradually thaw the pipe.
