Since we use our bathroom and kitchen sinks every day, they really go through a lot of wear and tear. From washing dishes to brushing our teeth, sinks handle quite a bit. It only stands to reason that they’re going to encounter some damage. At 2 Bro’s Plumbing, we’ve seen it all when it comes to sink-related problems. So, we know a thing or two about how to prevent the top causes of bathroom and kitchen sink damage.
Use drain covers to prevent clogged drains.
Clogged drains are a common problem, no matter the sink. Think about how much goes down our drains. In the kitchen, there are food scraps, grease and soap scum just to name a few drain-clogging culprits. In the bathroom, hair, toothpaste and soap residue are the usual suspects. In both locations, it’s wise to use drain covers. They works like sieves, catching the abovementioned waste while allowing water to seep through.
It’s also important to avoid pouring grease or oil down the drains of your kitchen sink. These substances often solidify when cooled and clog your pipes. Try to wipe away all hair that falls into your bathroom sink. Clear hair from your drain covers to allow water to easily drain as well. You may also want to engage in the practice of flushing your drains once a month. Use a simple solution comprised of vinegar and hot water to pour down the drain.
Clean your sink with mild, non-abrasive cleaners to prevent corrosion.
Have you noticed any rust in your sinks? Corrosion is a common issue with metal sinks. Constant exposure to water and harsh cleaning products can cause the sink’s protective coating to wear down. This can lead to rust spots or pitting. To clean your sink, Andrea Crowley of Better Homes & Gardens suggests using a solution made up of baking soda, dish soap, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, lemon and salt.
“Start by coating the wet sink in baking soda and adding a little dish soap and hot water to your sponge,” she instructs, “When scrubbing a sink, start with the sides of the basin and work your way down, pushing any grime directly into the drain. Keep adding soap and water as needed or until the surface is scum-free…Rinse with clean water. Stainless steel is notorious for showing water spots, so be sure to wipe your clean sink down using a plush microfiber cloth to dry and buff.”
Handle heavy items with care to prevent cracks.
Bathroom sinks are locations where most of us do our hair. We’re talking about drying your hair after a shower and styling it afterward. These practices require the use of such items as hair dryers and curling irons. These hard items are often the causes of cracks in sinks. Be careful! Dropping a heavy or hard object in a porcelain or ceramic sink can lead to unsightly cracks.
In the kitchen, heavy pans, appliances and other tools should be handled with care. They too can cause cracks if accidentally dropped in the sink. To help avoid such a circumstance, you may want to add a rubber sink mat. It can provide extra protection.
