Every homeowner faces a clogged drain sooner or later. Have you ever experienced a slow-draining bathroom sink, a backed-up shower or a smelly kitchen drain? It should go without saying that clogs are one of the most common plumbing nuisances. Fortunately, many minor blockages can be cleared without calling in a professional. That is, of course, if you know what to do.

Start with the right tools.

Before you dive into any DIY drain-clearing task, gather the right tools. Firstly, you will need a standard cup plunger. This is not to be mistaken for a toilet plunger. You’ll also need rubber gloves, a plastic drain snake or zip-it tool, baking soda, white vinegar and a kettle of hot water. Keep in mind, the water should be hot, but not boiling. As well, it’s important to stay patient and avoid aggressive tactics. The goal is to dislodge the clog safely without damaging your pipes.

Plunging remains one of the easiest and most effective ways to clear a minor blockage. Fill the sink or tub with enough water to cover the rubber part of the plunger. Seal it over the drain and push up and down vigorously for 20 to 30 seconds. This creates pressure that can loosen clogs near the surface. Once you’ve finished plunging, run hot water down the drain to flush out any debris.

Try the classic baking soda and vinegar method.

Pour about half a cup of baking soda directly into the drain. Follow this up by half a cup of white vinegar. Quickly plug the drain with a stopper or cloth to keep the fizzing reaction inside. Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes, then flush with a kettle of hot water. This method can dissolve minor grease, soap scum and residue clogs. The best part about this method is that it allows you to avoid harsh chemicals that can damage your pipes.

Manually remove hair and gunk.

If you’re dealing with a slow shower or bathroom sink, hair is likely the culprit. Remove the drain cover and use a plastic drain snake or even a bent wire hanger to fish out the blockage. You might be surprised at what’s lurking just a few centimetres below the surface. Dispose of the debris in the garbage, not down the drain. This is a simple yet highly effective technique, especially in households with long-haired residents or pets that are bathed in the tub.

Use a drain snake for deeper clogs.

When plunging and surface-level methods don’t work, a hand-crank drain snake can reach further into the pipe. Carefully insert the snake into the drain, turning the handle as you go. When you feel resistance, you’ve likely reached the clog. Keep rotating to catch or break up the blockage, then pull the snake out and dispose of any debris. Rinse with hot water afterward. This method is safe for most drains, but if you encounter strong resistance or suspect a main line issue, it’s best to stop and call a professional.
