A clogged drain can quickly throw your whole day off. This is especially true when it’s in the middle of your morning shower or while cleaning up after dinner. While your first instinct might be to opt for a quick fix, some of the most common at-home drain cleaning methods can actually do more harm than good.
At 2 Bro’s Plumbing, we’ve seen everything from melted pipes to deep blockages caused by well-meaning DIYers. So before you tackle that clog on your own, be sure to avoid making the most common drain cleaning mistakes homeowners make.
Using chemical drain cleaners.
Chemical drain cleaners often contain corrosive ingredients that can eat away at your pipes over time. While the clog might dissolve temporarily, the long-term damage from repeated chemical use can lead to leaks, weakened joints and costly repairs down the road. Not to mention, these cleaners are often ineffective against larger or deeper clogs.
“Many commercial drain cleaning products contain a cocktail of corrosive and toxic chemicals like sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide (lye),” informs the David Suzuki Foundation, “When these go down the drain, they can end up in wastewater systems and make their way into rivers, lakes and the ocean, polluting waterways and harming aquatic ecosystems.”
Pouring boiling water down the drain.
Boiling water can actually damage PVC and plastic piping by softening or warping the material, especially when combined with existing clogs. Even in metal pipes, the sudden temperature shift can cause pipe joints to expand and contract, weakening their integrity over time. While hot tap water can be useful for routine flushing, boiling water should be avoided. Instead, rely on professional-grade drain clearing methods that won’t compromise your plumbing system.
“The standard waste pipes are not designed for high temperatures,” writes Grace Dean for Tom’s Guide, “If you’ve got a blockage or you’re concerned that you might have, if you pour boiling water down your drains, you’re leaving that boiling water static in the pipes if it doesn’t clear the blockage.”
Sticking any object into the drain.
When a clog seems just out of reach, it’s tempting to reach for a wire coat hanger, screwdriver or other household item to try and fish it out. Unfortunately, makeshift tools can easily scratch or puncture your pipes. They can also push the clog deeper, making it even harder to reach.
The 2 Bro’s Plumbing team has even seen DIY tools break off and get stuck. This creates a bigger blockage than our customers started with. If you don’t have proper drain snakes or augers on hand, it’s best to avoid the DIY route and call in a trained technician.
