What Are The Best Ways To Keep Your Kitchen And Bathroom Drains Clear?

Clogged drains top the list of the most common plumbing issues homeowners face. We’re talking slow-draining kitchen sinks after dinner and bathroom basins that take forever to empty. There’s no question that blocked drains can quickly turn into frustrating problems. The good news is that with a few simple habits, you can keep your kitchen and bathroom drains flowing smoothly all year long

Say no to FOG.

The common clogged drain problem often starts with grease, fats and cooking oils. They may seem harmless when they’re hot and liquid. However, as they cool, they solidify inside your pipes and create stubborn blockages. Coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta, rice and fibrous vegetables can also accumulate and restrict water flow.

“When you cook with fat, oil and grease (FOG), do not dispose of it down the sink or flush it down the toilet,” insists the Durham Region website, “When FOG meets other items in the sewer system that should not be flushed (such as rags and wipes), it can form large clumps or balls. This can cause major sewer clogs. The use of hot water and detergent does not prevent these problems.”

Flush your drain with hot water regularly.

One of the easiest ways to prevent buildup is to run hot water down your kitchen sink. It’s a good idea to do this for 30 to 60 seconds after washing dishes. This helps move along soap residue and small amounts of grease before they have a chance to cling to the inner walls of your pipes. Bathroom sinks can also benefit from a weekly hot water flush. Soap scum and toothpaste may seem minor. But over time, they can form a sticky residue that narrows your pipes and slows drainage.

A monthly natural drain refresh can help keep things moving without exposing your plumbing to harsh chemicals. Pour about 125 mL (½ cup) of baking soda into the drain, followed by 250 mL (1 cup) of white vinegar. Let the mixture fizz for 10 to 15 minutes, then flush it with hot water. This method can help break down mild buildup and eliminate odours.

Prevent hair buildup in your bathroom drains.

In bathroom sinks and showers, hair is one of the leading causes of clogs. When hair combines with soap scum, it forms dense blockages that are difficult to remove. Installing a drain cover is a simple and inexpensive way to prevent hair from entering your pipes in the first place.

If you notice slow drainage, the issue may be building up in the P-trap beneath the sink. While some homeowners feel comfortable cleaning it themselves, improper removal can lead to leaks. When in doubt, it’s best to call a professional plumber to handle it safely.
