If we’re being totally honest, many of us take our drains for granted. We mindlessly view them as “get rid of it” mechanisms for pretty much any and all liquids. It’s time we all stop this line of thinking. There are many fluids (and solids, for that matter) that shouldn’t be sent down our drains. Being more mindful and respectful of our home’s drains will significantly reduce clogging. Clogged drains can lead to wide variety of issues. Which ones are the most common?
Slow drainage.
Have you ever noticed water starting to pool in your sink or bathtub instead of draining freely? At some point, we all have. Slow drainage can be caused by the build-up of hair, soap scum, food particles, grease and other debris. Sure, it may not seem like a big deal at first. However, slow drains are a clear sign that a blockage is forming. It will only get worse without attention. To prevent this issue, use drain strainers to catch scraps. As well, avoid pouring fats, oils and grease down the sink.
Pipe damage.
Constant clogs can lead to pressure build-up in your plumbing. Over time, this can strain your pipes and potentially cause cracks, leaks or even pipe bursts. If this happens, you’re looking at some pretty pricey repair jobs. It’s a good thing that winter has ended. But, make no mistake, it’ll be back eventually! In the winter, a partially clogged pipe is more likely to freeze. Remember that frozen water expands and can cause pipes to rupture. To help prevent pipe damage, keep an eye out for unusual leaks around your home.
Foul odours.
Have you ever encountered funky smells emanating from your kitchen or bathroom drains? If so, that’s a sign that something is decaying inside the pipe. Eww! Organic matter that gets trapped in your drains can start to rot and release a sewer-like smell. This issue is especially common in kitchen sinks where food scraps often get rinsed down without a garbage disposal. To minimize the chances of a nasty stink wafting up from your drains, run hot water and vinegar through your drains weekly. This will help to break down build-up and kill odour-causing bacteria.
“If you are experiencing sewer odours in your basement, it could be possible that the odours are entering through your basement floor drain,” informs the Durham Region website, “Your basement floor drain has a water trap under the drain. When the trap is filled with water, it creates a seal which prevents odours from entering your basement. Over time, this water in the trap can evaporate, which causes the odour.”
Gurgling sounds.
Have you ever heard a strange gurgling or bubbling noise when you flush the toilet? How about when you run the sink? These noises are signs of air being trapped in the pipes due to a clog. As water pushes past the obstructions, air bubbles get forced up through the drain. These sounds are early warning signs that a blockage is building somewhere in your plumbing system.
