If you’ve got long hair, you already know the struggle. Strands seem to end up everywhere, especially around your bathroom sink. While it might not seem like a big deal at first, hair is one of the leading causes of clogged drains in homes across Durham Region and the GTA. Over time, those loose strands can build up inside your pipes, trapping soap scum, toothpaste and other debris. Eventually, this leads to slow drains or complete blockages.
How normal is daily hair strand loss?
As reported by Kathryn Watson of Healthline, “according to the American Academy of Dermatologists, it’s normal to lose anywhere from 50 to 100 strands of hair per day. For people with longer hair strands, losing them may be more noticeable. Since there are 100,000 hair follicles — or more — on each person’s scalp, the loss of 100 or so hair strands a day doesn’t make a big difference in appearance.”
Hair doesn’t dissolve in water. Instead, it binds together and catches other particles flowing down your drain. When you’re brushing, styling or even just getting ready over the sink, loose strands can easily slip down the drain unnoticed.
What can you do to keep your bathroom sink flowing smoothly?
Firstly, install a small, inexpensive drain cover. It’s one of the most effective ways to stop hair from entering your pipes. These are easy to clean and can be found at most hardware stores. Be sure to clean your drain stopper regularly. Hair often wraps around the sink stopper just below the surface. Remove and clean it weekly to prevent buildup before it becomes a bigger issue. Also, once a week, run hot water down your sink for 30 to 60 seconds. This helps move along any small debris before it can accumulate.
Use a natural cleaning solution. Pouring a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down the drain once a month can help break down minor buildup. Follow it with hot water for best results. If you notice hair collecting around the sink, don’t rinse it away. Instead, wipe it up with a tissue and dispose of it in the garbage. Finally, try brushing your hair in a different area, like your bedroom. That way, loose strands won’t end up near your plumbing. This small habit change can make a big difference.
